Public Swimming Pools

The Athens City-County Health Department licenses and inspects all public swimming pools, spas, and spray grounds in Athens County. Public swimming pools and spas include those owned and operated by cities/villages, universities, hotels/motels, apartment complexes, private clubs, or campgrounds. This does not include pools or spas located at private homes.  If you have concerns about a public swimming pool located in Athens County, please contact this office.

All public pool operators are responsible for maintaining a safe and sanitary environment that is compliant with the Ohio Administrative Code 3701-31. Anyone who intends on opening, upgrading, or altering an existing pool must contact this office and Ohio Department of Health Public Swimming Pool Program. Information and additional resources for pool operators can be found on the forms page linked here: Forms
Public pools and spas are routinely inspected to ensure proper water quality and that the facilities are providing a safe, sanitary and healthy environment. You can view inspection records of licensed pools and spas here: Inspection Reports

It is important that swimmers take steps to protect themselves and others from getting sick when at a pool. The goal is to prevent germs from getting into the pool and causing illnesses when people come in contact or swallow contaminated water. The following basic steps can help prevent pool related illnesses:

1. Do not swim when you have diarrhea.  This is especially important for children in diapers.
2. Do not swallow water while swimming.
3. Take a shower before swimming.  Always wash your hands after using the restroom and changing diapers.
